PT Clouds: Working with Huge Point Clouds

Here is a quick way of getting what you need from a huge PT cloud plus a lot more.  Let’s create what I call a Hybrid PT Cloud. We'll take a huge 2500 acre LIDAR created PT cloud that is nearly 37 million points and import it into Civil 3D as PT clouds. We will do this by eventually creating three separate DWGs, each with one surface. Using data shortcuts we will reference into a third DWG the two other surfaces and paste them together to make a HYBRID surface that includes both.

Part 1: Point Clouds the new way of surveying? You decide.

Over the next few months I will be discussing some of my adventures with point clouds and ways of creating them and using then in both AutoCAD Civil 3D and InfraWorks.  Over this time I hope to get everyone on board as to why PT clouds are the new way of surveying. 

Here is just a teaser.  Below are two PT clouds created of the east steps of the Minnesota State Capital during its recent $300 million restoration project.
